Job description
JOB TITLE: Surgeon/Medical Officer
TEAM: Health Services
REPORTS TO: Senior Medical Officer
JOB PURPOSE:
To provide good quality professional, primary and secondary medical care to patients in accordance with directions issued by the UK General Medical Council on “Good Medical Practice”.
MAIN DUTIES:
Participate in a 24/7 on-call emergency service.
As a Surgeon
Perform all surgical cases in an efficient manner in accordance with the guidelines of the Royal College of Surgeons.
Perform endoscopies (within the limits of the equipment available) when indicated.
Perform ultra-sound screening for surgical cases within the scope of your experience and knowledge.
Keep comprehensive surgical notes and records.
As a Doctor
Attend all patients for consultation and medical management in outpatient clinics on designated departments. As a primary care practitioner.
Attend all emergencies when required.
Ensure the efficient management of all inpatients admitted to the Georgetown Hospital.
Consult and discuss with the Senior Medical Officer any medical matters that may benefit from a second opinion or tertiary referral.
Follow validated protocols (as approved by the SMO/MO and the applicable Professional Board) for management of specific conditions and procedures.
Carry out lectures on health issues and first aid when required.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Consult and discuss with the Senior Medical Officer on any medical matters which may benefit from a second opinion or tertiary referrals.
Undertake responsibilities and tasks delegated by the Senior Medical Officer.
Follow protocols (as approved by the Senior Medical Officer and the applicable professional board) for management of specific conditions and procedures.
Respect, protect and maintain medical confidentiality of patients.
Maintain up to date knowledge and skills as a GP and Surgeon as determined by the relevant professional body.
Job requirements
PERSON SPECIFICATION: Knowledge, skills, experience and personal attributes
Essential
A UK Medical Degree or international equivalent.
Registration with the General Medical Council or appropriate Professional Medical Council.
Post graduate qualification in General Surgery with Specialist registration with the General Medical Council, or other recognised Surgical College.
Significant experience in General Surgery and Trauma case Management. Assist the SMO in managing Obstetrical and gynaecological cases to the limit of your experience in these disciplines.
Experience as a General Practitioner – dealing with a range of complex conditions.
Good Communication skills with colleagues, patients and other health professionals
A good understanding of the dynamics between clinician and management
Evidence of Continued Professional Development
Ability and skills to enable working within a clinical setting with limited local support
A certificate of good standing from the relevant professional body
A clean valid driving licence.
