What are we looking for?



The Ascension Island Government is looking for General Construction Operatives to join our Buildings and Civils team. You will be joining the Ascension Island Government during a busy but exciting time, with five million pounds of infrastructure projects planned over the next 5 years. To be successful in this role you will have a broad range of experience gained within the construction industry, and will be prepared to contribute across multiple teams in order to achieve results. Every day will be different and you will need to be resilient and agile to overcome challenges. Concrete preparation & pouring, bricklaying, masonry, fencing and painting experience is a must. An open mind, willingness to get stuck in and a positive attitude towards health and safety is hugely beneficial. What are we offering?


We are offering a two year, accompanied status, contract with a salary of £8,500 per year (taxable in Ascension). You will also receive the following benefits:

  • 37.5 hour working week
  • Rent free accommodation (with electricity and water allowances)
  • A food allowance of £3,089 / £6,175 dependent on status
  • Relocation costs for your personal effects, including the shipment of a vehicle
  • One mid-contract return journey to your country of recruitment  for your and your family
  • A gratuity payable on the successful completion of a 2 year contract
  • 30 days annual holiday (with additional 9 days public holidays)

Person Specification



  • Must have solid experience of general construction operations in order to be competent to carry out main duties unsupervised.
  • Must have working knowledge of Health & Safety at Work procedures and requirements.
  • Must have a valid driving licence for cars as a minimum.
  • Must be physically fit and able to work outdoors for extended periods of time.
  • Must have a careful, methodical and accurate approach to work as well as being able to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Time Management skills.
  • Knowledge of First Aid Practices or willing to learn.
  • Must have a strong awareness of safety issues.


  • Recognised building, Health and Safety or First Aid qualifications.
