Job description

JOB TITLE: Construction Operative - Mason

TEAM: Facilities

REPORTS TO: Facilities Team Leader

JOB PURPOSE: To undertake any masonry work, bricklaying, stonework, blockwork, paving, rendering and plasterwork; new, maintenance and repair. To carry out stevedore duties as a core function, which involves working a 12-hour shift and, at times, weekends.

MAIN DUTIES:

  1. Construction and repair of buildings i.e. Bungalows, Garages, Workshops, tanks, etc.
  1. Repairs to walls, pavements, manholes etc.
  1. Erect all types of fencing, chain link, interwoven, stock fencing etc. and to paint the same.
  1. Assist with estimates/quotations when required.
  1. Site levelling and marking out of extensions and new buildings.
  1. Carry out ship work and other reasonable overtime duties as and when required.
  1. To undertake internal and external painting.
  1. To undertake ceramic, porcelain and other wall and floor tiling.
  1. Prepare and erect shuttering/formwork and assist inlaying concrete bases and lintels.
  1. Assist other tradesmen when required and undertake any other related duties as requested by the Team Leader.
  1. To undertake any other duties consistent with the post, and commensurate with the skills and competency of the post, including but not restricted to:
  • Basic carpentry
  • Painting
  • Tiling
  • Scaffolding

JOB TITLE: Construction Operative – Painter and Glazier

TEAM: Facilities

REPORTS TO: Facilities Team Leader

JOB PURPOSE: To the interior and exterior decoration of buildings and similar duties. To carry out stevedore duties as a core function, which involves working a 12-hour shift and, at times, weekends.

MAIN DUTIES:

  1. To carry out the interior and exterior decoration of bungalows and other buildings.
  1. To liaise with the Team Leader in planning work programmes and estimating materials to be used.
  1. Carry out preparations for the redecoration of buildings. Report defects found.
  1. Window glazing & reglazing.
  1. To carry out mechanical/manual jointing of plasterboard.
  1. Erecting scaffolding and staging for the works.
  1. To varnish/paint wooden fences etc.
  1. Assist other tradesmen when required.
  1. To carry out stevedore duties as and when required.
  1. To ensure that all duties and performance standards comply with:
  • Current Health & Safety Procedures
  • Standards of Work – QHSE
  • Customer Care Requirements
  • Key Performance Indicators
  1. To undertake any other duties consistent with the post, and commensurate with the skills and competency of the post.

JOB PURPOSE: To undertake any carpentry, repairs, maintenance and similar duties for the Ascension Island Government. To carry out stevedore duties as a core function, which involves working a 12-hour shift and, at times, weekends.

MAIN DUTIES:

  1. Operate and maintain carpentry tools and equipment.
  1. Make and fit all woodwork requirements for buildings, such as:
  • All types of doors and cases
  • All types of windows and cases
  • Gates
  • Fly screens
  • Trellis
  • Formwork (shuttering).
  1. Undertake other building work as required including:
  • All types of ceiling (suspended and cladding).
  • Stud work and plaster boarding.
  • Glass cutting and glazing.
  • Fit all builders’ ironmongery.
  • Fit all types of guttering.
  • First coat painting and varnishing when required.
  • Repair to kitchen units, upholstery and furniture.
  • All types of floor and wall tiling including, ceramic, marley tiles, carpet tiles etc.
  • Assist with all types of roofing – Decra tiling, asbestos and roofing iron, Onduline, etc.
  • Repairs and Maintenance to bungalows.
  1. 4. To carry out stevedore duties as a core function, which involves working a 12-hour shift and at times, weekends.
  1. To strip asbestos in accordance with UK regulations (after appropriate training)
  1. To undertake any other related duties as requested by the Team Leader and to work reasonable overtime as and when required.
  1. To liaise with the Team Leader in planning works and estimating materials to be used.

Requirements

Mason

Essential

  1. Has previous demonstrable experience in Masonry duties/tasks and preferably gained a qualification in this trade.
  1. Previous experience of internal and external painting and wall and floor tiling.
  1. Must have working knowledge of Health & Safety at Work procedures and requirements.
  1. Knowledge of First Aid practices or willingness to learn.
  1. Ability to keep accurate timesheets of jobs undertaken.
  1. Effective time management skills.
  1. Effective communication skills.
  1. Must hold a valid driver’s licence of classes A and B.
  1. Interpersonal skills to establish confident and effective relationship with colleagues, and customers.
  1. An effective team member with the ability to motivate self and others.
  1. Ability to work under pressure with little or no supervision.
  1. Systematic approach to work, technical minded and logical attributes

Desirable

  1. Significant relevant practical site experience

Painter

Essential

  1. Has previously carried out some painting duties/tasks, or gained a qualification in this trade.
  1. Good level of physical fitness, including the ability to lift, work at heights and in differing conditions.
  1. Must be able to prioritise workloads and meet deadlines.
  1. High level of attention to detail.
  1. Must be able to work independently and as a part of a team.
  1. Knowledge of workplace safety practices including manual handling procedures and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health.
  1. Knowledge of First Aid practices or willingness to learn.
  1. Excellent communication skills.
  1. Effective time management and prioritising skills.
  1. Systematic approach to work, technical minded and logical attributes
  1. Must hold a valid driving licence for class A & B vehicles.

Desirable

  1. At least five practical site experience.

Carpenter

Essential

  1. Has previously carried out some painting duties/tasks, or gained a qualification in this trade.
